Carlon had ordered one room for them, and a bed big enough for three. Holin was supposed to lay in the middle, so he couldn't run away.

"I want to sleep without worrying about someone sneaking away in the night," said Carlon with a direct look at Holin.

Holin met his gaze unflinchingly, the color leaving his cheeks and even starting to abandon his lips. "No."

"Well, I'm not sitting up all night watching you. You can sleep in the middle, or you can sleep on the floor, tied to the bed leg."

Holin bit his lip. He was breathing too hard and fast and his nerve had forsaken him. Moisture gleamed in his eyes. He cast a quick, hunted look between the two men, walked to the door and then abruptly back, his hands folded behind his back.

"Then chain me. I'll sleep on the floor." His chin jutted slightly and he met Carlon's gaze with a glazed defiance that masked a good deal of fear.

"Carlon," began Kale appeasingly. There must be some other way. He didn't want Holly to be afraid or restrained.

"No. I'm not going after the little scamp again today."

"Little scamp!" protested Holin, his chest puffing up indignantly.

"If he doesn't have the sense he was born with, he can take the chain and like it."

He paled further under his tan, mouth wobbling a little, as if he wanted to speak, but was afraid he would start pleading.

"Give it here," snapped Kale, and yanked the manacle from Carlon's hand, giving him a glare. "Why do you carry around a thing like this anyway. . ." he muttered.

Carlon gave him a faint, cocky grin, looking more like his old self. "Oh, such things can come in handy." He waved a hand airily and relinquished the bonds.

Holin and Kale faced one another. "Will you give me your word you won't run?" he asked.

"His word—" began Carlon with a sighing sort of snort, shaking his head.

"My word is worth nothing. Bind me if you wish," said Holin scornfully, standing tall, his lip curling so it wouldn't tremble, Kale suspected.

Holin sat down on the floor and waited, crossing his arms, not looking at Kale. Kale sighed, and bent, fastening one end of the manacle to the bedpost, one to Kale's slender ankle. He covered it up again with the edge of his trouser, and then handed him down a pillow and a blanket carefully.

"It will be more comfortable on the tick mattress."

"If I wanted ticks, I would try it." He didn't look at either of them again, but kept scornfully turned away. He was a small lump on the floor, the chain rattling a little each time he moved to adjust positions.

Kale lay there, watching him, as Carlon blew out the light and then creaked into the other side of the bed. It was a big bed; they weren't anywhere near touching, and mightn't have been even with a third.

"I love you," said Kale softly.

"Now, now," said Carlon gleefully. "This is dreadful sudden."

"Shut up!"

On the floor, Holin stifled a hoarse little laugh.
